Blue Motorcycle Drink Recipe

This Blue Motorcycle Drink Recipe is my current favorite cocktail recipe. But I wasn’t always a fan of Blue Curaçao.

The first drink I had when I turned 21 was psychedelic blue. No joke. It was terrible: sour and almost bitter. It was not my favorite. For years after, I completely avoided anything blue. This included any cocktails that include Blue Curaçao. But then something happened…

Skip ahead a decade and I’m vaca with two of my close friends. Lying by the pool, my friend comes back with the bluest of blue drinks ever!

Not knowing my aversion to anything blue and alcoholic, I took a sip and was pleasantly surprised. It turns out, it was a Blue Motorcycle Drink. Who would have thought something I used to loath could actually be delicious. Ok, it happens to me all the time. You?

So what exactly is this mysterious glass of turquoise goodness and how do you make a Blue Motorcycle Cocktail? Let’s get shaking!

What is a Blue Motorcycle Drink?

A Blue Motorcycle Drink is a strong drink that combines a variety of liquors including rum, tequila, vodka, gin, and Blue Curaçao.

It also contains lemon-lime soda and sour mix. I’m a huge fan of making homemade sour mix. It’s not hard, only takes about 20 minutes and makes a huge difference for your cocktails. You can also make a big batch and keep it in the fridge for when you need it.

Blue Motorcycle Cocktail or Long Island Iced Tea?

Let’s chat about a Long Island Iced Tea versus a Blue Motorcycle Drink. Also called a Blue Long Island Iced Tea. The only difference between a blue motorcycle drink and a long island iced tea is Blue Curaçao. Instead of cola and triple sec, you use Blue Curaçao and lemon-lime soda. I always think of it as a more summery alternative.

What is Blue Curaçao?

Blue Curaçao is a blue liqueur that’s used in a ton of different cocktails: From Blue Motorcycle Drinks to Irish Trash Cans to Sweet Tart Shots to Blue Hawaiians.

It’s a strong liqueur with an ABV that ranges from 15% to 40%, depending on the brand.

Its taste is citrusy and is made from a citrus fruit called a Laraha that is grown on the island of Curaçao. Its blue color is not natural but comes from food coloring.

Blue Motorcycle Drink Are Strong (please drink responsibly)

When I say that Blue Motorcycle Drinks are strong, I mean it. So please drink responsibly and know your tolerance and limit.

But how strong is strong though? Well, take this into consideration. A Blue Motorcycle Drink is also known as an AMF. What is an AMF you ask? It stands for Adios Motherfucker or Goodbye Motherfucker. Because though these drinks are sweet and sour with a hit of bubbly soda, if you have one, it will probably be the only drink you need. As in One drink and adios for the evening!

  • 1.5 oz White rum
  • 1.5 oz Silver Tequila
  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • 1.5 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 2 oz Lemon-lime soda
  • Splash of homemade sour mix (to taste)
  • Ice

  • Lemon wedge

Making Homemade Sour Mix

Though sour mix is only one ingredient of many in this Blue Motorcycle Drink Recipe, making home-made sour mix is going to elevate this strong cocktail to a whole other level.

Sour mix is also not hard to make. You can make a big batch and store it in the refrigerator. Here’s how it’s done.

Ingredients for Sour Mix

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup lemon or lime juice

Instructions for Sour Mix

  1. In a small saucepan on medium heat combine the sugar and water. What you’re doing here is making a simple syrup. There are lots of different varieties of simple syrups when it comes to cocktails. But water and sugar are the foundations for most.
  2. Stir your sugar and water until the sugar is completely dissolved. This is important. You also want to watch your pan closely, because as you know: sugar burns easily.
  3. Remove your simple syrup from the stove and let cool. Then pour it into a glass container.
  4. Add your lime juice or lemon juice to your simple syrup and mix well.
  5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for the next time you need to make a perfect cocktail.

Instructions

  1. In a large cocktail shaker combine your alcohol (rum, tequila, vodka, gin, and Blue Curaçao) and shake well. You want it to almost froth.
  2. Pour your cocktail into a Collins glass or highball glass over ice. Garnish a lemon wedge and a maraschino cherry, or two. (You really can never have too many maraschino cherries!)
