One way to make St. Patrick’s Day occur every day of the year is by making a classic Irish Trash Can drink recipe. It is one drink that I will whip up for parties year-round.
Since we wholeheartedly want to avoid offending anyone, we call it the Trash Can Drink. That being said, the Trash Can Drink sure is delicious.
What is in an Irish Trash Can Drink?
With 3 different kinds of liquors, 3 liqueurs and your favorite energy drink (Red Bull), the Trash Can is an incredibly strong cocktail. It is a layered drink that is blue at the bottom and green at the top. It is typically served with an actual can of Red Bull upside down in your glass.
The most popular version is the Irish Trash Can. Why Irish? No one really knows but there are some theories. According to the website Irish Central, this drink only has an “Irish” moniker because the dang cocktail is green. According to Urban Dictionary: “This drink is green and tastes like candy. Very popular around St. Patrick’s Day, but great for any occasion.” See? No one knows.
That being said, it is a delicious drink that I recommend that all cocktail lovers try at least once.
Please note: This is one cocktail that you must drink responsibly. With the 6 different alcohols mixed with the caffeine, you will need to pace yourself with this drink.
Irish Trash Can Drink Ingredients
- .5 oz of Vodka
- .5 oz of Gin
- .5 oz of Light Rum
- .5 oz of Blue Curacao
- .5 oz of Peach Schnapps
- .5 oz of Triple Sec
- 8 oz can of Red Bull
- 1 Drinking Glass (A highball glass or a pilsner glass works perfectly)
- 1 Straw
The Traditional Irish Trash Can Recipe
Pour your alcohol into a tall highball or pilsner glass that is filled with ice and stir.
Open the Red Bull and place the open end in the glass leaning the can against the inner rim. (Pro tip: Slowly ease your Red Bull into the glass so that the energy drink doesn’t gush out).
Leave the can in the drink. It will continue to dispense more Red Bull into your drink as you enjoy your beverage with a straw.
What is Blue Curaçao and What Does it Taste Like?
Blue curaçao is a popular orange-flavored liqueur that gets its blue color from food grade dyes. The flavor comes from bitter orange peels, giving it a slightly bitter taste that is reminiscent of oranges. Blue curaçao typically has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of about 15 to 40%.
The blue liqueur known as Curaçao was created on the island of Curaçao, which is located next to Aruba and just off the coast of Venezuela.
When the Spanish colonized the island in 1499, they brought with them Valencia orange seeds. However, in this dry climate, the fruit became bitter and inedible. The groves were left untouched for decades turning into the Lahara orange. Eventually, someone started to sun-dry the peels and distill them into Curaçao liqueur.

Ingredients
- .5 oz Vodka
