I am so excited to share the unique way we were able to add some fun personalized home decor to our living room this week. With a little help from Custom Cut Decor, we had a new rustic wall hanging ready to display in less than an hour, and that includes a coat of paint. I have always been a fan of the rustic-looking country crafts, I just haven’t been able to achieve the look I wanted until now.

I had a vision in my head of what I wanted and how I wanted to do it before I even saw the gorgeous 4 inch flat rusty letters in person. I wanted to make a wall hanging for above the sofa with our last name (notice the ELEVEN letters – sigh!), the states that hubby and I were born in and a rustic pallet type heart for the center. I placed my order without thinking what exactly I would place the letters on.
After I got the letters and the heart in the mail, I tried to come up with something unique for the wall. Everything I tried just wasn’t quite big enough for our ridiculously long last name. Then it hit me! I picked up these cute shutters over the summer for $5 bux! To my surprise, the letters, heart and both states fit perfectly. Ok, I had to curve the letters just a little, but I think that only adds to its charm, don’t you?
I gave the shutters a good cleaning and a generous coat of antique white paint. The same paint I used on the top of our Blue Bedroom Furniture Makeover. Even though it was antique white, it was still a little too stark white for my taste, and it didn’t quite match the look I was going for. Using my favorite Homestead Blue, the whole piece got a swipe with a brush. This was a dry brush effect, using very little paint. Just enough to catch the edges and the grain of the wood.
Once the paint was dry, it was time to position the letters so they fit just right across the shutters. Just look at all that rusty goodness! The folks over at Custom Cut Decor do such an amazing job making the letters look authentic. They really do look like they were just pulled from the bottom of the ocean floor. How cool is that!?
All of the letters come with their own bag of rusty nails to adhere to your surface. They match perfectly.
The 12-inch pallet heart adds just the right amount of whimsy to go with the rustic lettering. It is almost like these shutters were made specifically for my new wall hanging. I don’t think I could have picked a better surface to add these fun items to if I tried.
*Yes, I know the Massachusetts piece is upside down. I couldn’t resist sharing this photo of my Reno sitting pretty on the other side of the room. Capturing him in the reflection of the mirror was just too cute not to share. I won’t tell you that he is actually begging for pringles while I was taking these photos.

I love this Heather! What a great idea to take plain shutters and turn them into something that’s dear to your family’s heart. I love Reno’s pic in the mirror it’s so perfectly centered too LOL! Beautiful job and I just adore Custom Cuts products oh my gosh they are fab!
Love how you put this together. From the shutters to everything else this looks so cool. What a great way to commemorate your family name.
What a smart idea to make a personalized piece of art. And I can even tell that the states are Nevada and Mass…….. but can’t spell it. LOL… Great layering and texture. Great job.
