For that reason, I’m giving you not 1 but 2 recipes for edible batters.

If you follow what I refer to as the “cheat” version (the version in the recipe card with the pictures), you’re edible brown batter will also be dairy-free, gluten-free, and refined-sugar free.

I’m aware that’s a ton of elements to cut out. So if you’re not concerned about your sugar, dairy, or gluten intake, you can use my second recipe. I assure you, both are delicious, and you can’t go wrong with either.

How to Make Edible Brownie Batter From a Box

The easiest when to make edible brownie batter with a rich chocolate flavor is by using a boxed brownie mix. My favorite go-to brand with no-refined sugar and is also gluten-free is Simple Mills brownie mixed made with almond flour. And my go-to sugar-free chocolate chips are Lily’s Milk Chocolate Baking Chips.

Here’s how I put it all together to satisfy one crazy sweet tooth!

total time: 3 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 box brownie batter mix (Simple Mills brownie mixed)
  • 1 cup sugar-free chocolate chips

  2. Next, add your oil and mix well until the brownie batter looks completely wet.

  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (or chocolate chunks)

  1. First, heat treat your flour (see below for instructions). Allow to cool.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and cocoa powder.

How to Heat-Treat Flour

Don’t be intimated. It sounds more complicated than it actually is. To heat-treat your flour, the easiest way is to do it in the microwave.

  1. Place your flour in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high for 1-2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.
  2. Allow to cool before you use.

Edible Brown Batter Substitutions

Swap out butter. If you want to replace unsalted butter, you can replace it with vegan butter. You can also use coconut oil instead of butter. Use a 1:1 ratio when using either substitution.

Chocolate chunks. Chocolate chips are great, but chocolate chunks will work just as well. You can also use chopped up candy bars such as snickers if you want to go all out.

Gluten-free flour. If you’re not using a boxed mix like the recipe above. Swapping out all-purpose flour with either almond or gluten-free flour works well. Here are a few of the best gluten-free flours on the market.

Brownie Batter Additions

Sure, you could stop at chocolate chips or chocolate chunks, but why limit your joy? Below are a few no-fail favorite add-ins:

  • Freeze-dried strawberries (or any freeze-dried fruit)
  • Nuts (such as pecans or walnuts)
  • Candies such as M&Ms or Reese’s Pieces
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini marshmallows

Edible Brownie Batter FAQs

Is it safe to eat brownie batter?

Generally no. Because raw brownie batter contains raw eggs and un-treated flour, both of which can contain harmful bacteria. With that said, if you leave out the eggs and heat-treat your flour, brownie batter becomes safe to eat.

Do I need to heat-treat my flour?

You don’t always have to heat-treat your flour, but it can be a good idea. Raw flour can sometimes contain harmful bacteria like E. coli. And we all know that’s a big no-no when cooking. But heat-treating flour kills that bacteria.

What if I have leftover edible brownie batter?

This is an easy one! If you have leftover edible brownie batter, throw some egg in it, scoop your batter onto a baking sheet, and bake it for 10-12 minutes! Brownie cookies!
