How To Bring An Old Boring Piece Back To Life With Paint

I have been working hard on my bedroom make over the past few weeks. Since we live in a rental, I have to be very selective on what I do, since I have to put it back to the way it was if I do anything super drastic. I decided not to paint the walls, rip up carpet, and knock down walls just yet. Ok, I won’t be doing any of that, but it sure does sound like fun doesn’t it? For this makeover, I simply wanted to change some furniture pieces, add in some color where ever I can, and just bring a little life to our space. Even though the makeover won’t be ready until the end of September (be sure to sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media so you don’t miss it!), I wanted to show you one of the pieces that I finished this weekend using the Diva of DIY’s chalky mix for paint. Let’s take a look at this fun painting projects, and I will show you How to bring an old boring piece back to life with paint.

Like I said before, I am working on a full room makeover for September, I can’t wait to get that completely finished. I have been working on a few smaller projects when I have time over the last few weeks. Now that the kids are back in school, I will have more time to get everything put together. I am super excited. I spotted this sweet little sewing table on a local buy sell & trade group online for just $10. Sure it had some imperfections, ok a lot of imperfections, but I knew it had potential. With a little elbow grease and a lot of sanding, I was able to show off all of its style. Take a look at a few of the before photos.

The original post on the BST group didn’t show a closeup of this piece, I knew it had some damage, possibly even some wood rot, this is how it looked when we brought it home. Very sturdy, but the top finish had what looked like water damage. I’m not really sure what was put over the top of the real wood. Is that laminate? It was a thin piece of wood type material, it cracked and splintered when I was trying to remove it.

I had to use a screwdriver and mallet to lift it off the top, it was glued on pretty good. I had almost all of it off until I hit a snag. Someone used A LOT of glue for some of it. I tried sanding with an electric sander and sanding by hand, chiseling and prying, it just wouldn’t budge. I had to really pound the screwdriver under that top layer and twist to get it to come up. Unfortunately, I caused a little bit of damage to the top. Deep grooves that I just couldn’t buff out.  I decided to just go with it, it gives the piece a little character I think. Besides, you can’t really see it unless you are right on top of it anyway. No one will notice. I hope!

Once I got it all sanded and wiped clean, I gave the base 3 coats of antique white DIY chalk type paint I made at home.

The top is where I used the Diva of DIY’s chalk mix. I picked up a sample of Onyx black which was exactly 1 cup of paint. Perfect amount to follow the directions on the chalk mix. You can visit The Diva of DIY to see her line of products, and get the instructions on how to turn any latex paint into your very own chalky finish paint. You will be amazed at how simple it is, and the finish was perfect.

After 2 coats of black chalky finish paint, I loved the way it looked. A little bit rustic, but still elegant enough to give it a bit of class.

I added some super cool brushed silver knobs to replace the wood plugs that were originally on the drawer fronts. This pieces will eventually make its way to the other side of the room to hold the tv, once the room makeover is complete. For now, it is the perfect addition to the hallway. I may just need to keep an eye out for another one to match.

I am completely thrilled with how this piece came out. Once everything else is complete, it will all tie in perfectly in the new and improved bedroom.

  1. I love the black and white two-tone finish! Great job getting that veneer off. Whew, that sounded like A LOT of work. It’s so awesome that you saved this little side table.

  2. I was following along and feeling your pain as you were trying to remove the old top and as for any imperfection I too think it adds character. Your makeover is fantastic and I am so glad I follow you.
