How do you build a seating area around a fire pit?

When building your fire pit seating there are four key considerations: Safety, style, ease of creating, and price.

#1 Safety  – How far should the seating be from the fire pit?

Three to four feet of distance should be left between the seating area and the fire pit. This amount of space balances the need to not be too close to the fire pit yet close enough to feel the heat of the fire pit while providing some room for someone to pass between you and the fire pit.

#2 Style – What seating styles are right for my fire pit and backyard?

This one is a tough one because the answer is that it truly depends.

First look at the aesthetics of your background. Then consider how your fire pit will be used. Do you care about trying to pair your fire pit so that it blends into the environment of your backyard?

How comfortable do you want the seating options to be? Sitting on a wooden log is fine for a bit, but is uncomfortable in the long run. The examples that are provided below will help inspire you to make the style choice that is right for your backyard.

#3 Ease to create – How much effort are you willing to put into creating your fire pit seating?

You can spend as little and as much time as you want creating your fire pit seating. If spending little time is your jam, I suggest just buying four or five outdoor chairs and moving onto enjoying your fire pit.

However, if you want to go the do-it-yourself route, there are plenty of options for you to consider, ranging from simple to intense. Whatever path you choose, there are several examples that are provided below.

#4 Price – How much are you willing to spend to create your seating?

When it comes to choosing the seating for your fire pit, you should factor in how much you will need to spend in order to make your idea into reality.

Some options such as creating concrete benches and Adirondack chairs can cost a few hundred (and sometimes more thousand) dollars. While more budget options, such as simple tree logs and outdoor chairs are available.

In the examples provided below, I have broken down the typical costs for the suggested options so that you will not have sticker shock in the middle of executing your vision.
