Colorful Faux Wood Thanksgiving Centerpiece!
I love the look of wood when it comes to decorating for any holiday. Even in everyday home decor, a great wood piece can add a touch of farmhouse and a touch of sophistication to any space. Real wood pieces can be a little pricey, so why not make your own?
I’m not talking about busting out the power tools and hammer and nails. I am talking about a premade box, some paint, and a few creative ideas. With these things in your back pocket, you can create just about anything. Here is how we made this Colorful Faux Wood Thanksgiving Centerpiece.
- Dollar Tree Cardboard Shelf Box
- White Chalk Paint
- Brown Chalk Paint
- Foam Brush
Supplies Used For Filling A Centerpiece:
- Wooden Dowels
- Metal Thankful Sign
- Mini Pumpkin
- Silk Flowers in bright fall colors
- Decorative Ribbon (Of course I picked Buffalo Check!)
- Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks
How To Paint Cardboard To Look Like Wood
You can find these cardboard shelf-sitting blocks at the Dollar Tree for almost every holiday or season. I believe they are just pressed cardboard covered in a thin paper.
Start by covering the entire block in white chalk paint. I prefer chalk paint because it is thicker than regular craft paint. Feel free to use whatever paint you have on hand. Just know that you may need multiple coats to cover the design on the block. Set aside to dry.
*Tip – Try using a mini steamer over the paper. Run the steamer lightly over the paper, and it should peel off with a little effort.
Once the white paint is completely dry, you will want to DRY brush the brown paint onto the white paint using a foam brush. I like a foam brush because it doesn’t leave distinct lines, it leaves more of a smudge or a wood grain pattern.
Dip the end of the foam brush into the brown paint. Wipe off most of the paint onto a paper towel. You want paint on the foam brush but just a small amount.
Starting at the edge of the block, press gently then lightly swipe the foam across the entire length of the block. Repeat as necessary to get your desired look.
I like to add more pressure along the edges so it looks a bit more distressed. Also adding a little more pressure throughout the main part of the “wood” to mimic knot holes.
Once you are satisfied with the look of your wood, set the block aside to dry completely.
Decorating Your Fall Centerpiece!
Once your paint is completely dry, it’s time for my favorite part, the decorating!
Dollar Tree has some adorable metal letters that are already cut out and ready to use. I found a package for Fall that said Thankful, Welcome, and Harvest. The Thankful cutout is just right for a Thanksgiving centerpiece.
To make the words raised up from the box, I used hot glue and Gorilla glue to secure 2 wood dowels into the center of the block. Once that was dry, I glued the word Thankful to those dowels and painted both with black chalk paint.
To decorate my Thanksgiving Centerpiece, I added dried moss, a mini pumpkin, and 4 colorful fall flowers. Attach a decorative ribbon to the front of the box to tie everything together.
You can fill your centerpiece with whatever matches your home decor. Let your creative juices flow and get to crafting!
