In a mixing bowl, combine the ground venison, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Use your hands to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions and shape them into burger patties, pressing a small indentation into the center of each patty. This will help the burgers cook evenly. Set aside.
Place the venison burger patties in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and let it get hot. Add olive oil or butter to coat the bottom of the pan.
Once the oil is hot, carefully place the venison patties into the skillet.
Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on one side, or until they develop a deep, golden-brown crust.
Flip the patties and cook for another 4-5 minutes on the other side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
If you're adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover the skillet to help it melt.
