Dollar Tree Fall Decor Using Foam Pumpkins

If you have been in a Dollar Tree in the last few years, then you have seen the carvable foam pumpkins that they sell just before fall. There are hundreds of ideas to make the bright orange pumpkins pretty and upcycled to fit just about any decor.

Since we are going with a black and white or neutral theme in our house, I needed a new sign for the front porch. I was inspired by a few other projects that I have seen that made the pumpkins 3D. Here is how we put ours together.

Supplies Needed:

  • 3 Rectangle wood/board Signs (You can also use wood blanks, scrap wood, or anything you have available)
  • Large Craft Sticks
  • 2 Foam Carvable Pumpkins (These are similar to the ones found at Dollar Tree)
  • Wood Stem Pieces
  • Hot Glue & Glue Gun
  • Craft Paint (I used white and black chalk paint, spiced carrot, nutmeg, and thicket green)
  • Decorative Ribbon for hanging

How to assemble your Dollar Tree Fall Decor Sign

Lay your rectangle signs with the store image facing up on a hard surface. Glue the large craft sticks across all three seams. I used hot glue and E6000 glue because this one will be outside. Once the glue is completely dry and secure, flip your sign over to reveal the blank backside.

Remove any ribbon or hangers that came on the boards.

Split the foam pumpkins in half. This is easier than you think. I actually just gave them a bit of a squeeze and they popped in half. You could also use a craft knife or a small craft saw if you’re afraid they will break.

Trim off any bumps or edges so the pumpkin halves will lay flat on your board. Discard the stems or save them for another project.

Paint the backside of your board completely white. I did two coats to make sure it covered well.

Using the dry brush method, lightly go over the edges with black paint, pulling inward. To give the boards more of a faux shiplap look, you can also go over the seams with the dry brush and black paint. This will add a shadow look where the boards meet.

*Tip for dry brushing wood grain – I like to use a gently used foam brush when I am looking to get wood grain. Dip the tip of the foam into the paint and wipe almost all of it off on a paper towel. Gently brush over the areas you would like to have the wood grain show up. Use a little more pressure for deeper/thicker lines and less pressure for lighter lines.

Once your base coat and dry brushing are completely dry, add your favorite fall saying. You can even find Dollar Tree Fall Words ready-made that you can just attach if you don’t own a Cricut.

Glue your pumpkins in place and paint them your favorite fall colors.

When the pumpkins are dry, hot glue some wood stems to the top for a rustic look.

Add decorative ribbon and pretty bows for your hanger. I just stapled the ribbon to the back of the boards. You could also drill holes and feed the ribbon through if you like.

This project was super simple and so much fun to do. I can’t wait to make them for every holiday that is coming up!
