Rae Dunn Inspired Custom Ornaments Rudolph and Reindeer

Custom ornaments are a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that you can proudly display around your home during the holidays. Sometimes the price tag on a custom piece can be a little steep for my taste. This alone is enough to inspire me to create my very own custom ornaments. Your imagination is your only limitation when it comes to creating your custom piece. For this project, I took inspiration from the extremely talented and oh so beautiful pieces from Rae Dunn. Store-bought ornaments get a quick makeover to take them from boring to fabulous in no time at all.

My decorating style

When it comes to decorating for Christmas, I have a unique way of adding holiday cheer to my home. I like to call it “A Hoarders Holiday”. Ok, so maybe that is a little extreme. I don’t exactly qualify as a hoarder, but I tend to collect and keep anything that crosses my path when it comes to Christmas decorations. Some are glitzy and shiny like the DIY Glitter Ornaments, others are rustic and cute like the kids Box Of Love Holiday Craft. Mixing the two doesn’t always look like the magazine articles you see in the store, however, it works for us. Every piece has a story, sentimental value, or simply because I think it is cute. How ever you decorate your home for the holidays, make it your own. As long as you love it, that is the only thing that matters.

This cute electric fireplace was a recent gift from my mom. I have never had a fireplace! Not a real one, or an electric one. I couldn’t wait to decorate it for Christmas. I knew right away I wanted to make some custom ornaments to add a little holiday cheer to the mantel.

As a lover of all things Rae Dunn and buffalo plaid, inspiration struck almost instantly. Using my Cricut Explore Air I cut all eight of the reindeer names on Oracal 631 black vinyl. I left Rudolph solid red with the glitter technique I showed you on the DIY Glitter Ornaments. Rudolph speaks for himself, there is no mistaking his bright shiny redness.

The Decorating Process

I started by downloading a free “The Skinny” font from Dafont.com.

Please read copyright information and terms of use before downloading any fonts. I am not responsible for any legal issues or consequences that may occur from copyright infringement.

Put all 8 reindeer names into Cricut Design Space

*Design Space Tip – Center the text and reduce the line spacing to conserve vinyl.

Once the names are cut and the excess vinyl has been weeded, cut the names apart so each name is its own “sticker”. Cover with transfer tape trimmed as close to the letters as you can get it without cutting into the black vinyl. Remove the backing.

*Applying Vinyl Tip – When applying vinyl to a curved surface, make small slits around the outer edge of the transfer tape between each letter. This will give the transfer tape a little give when applying to a curved surface.

Center the names and apply vinyl directly to the ornament.

Top with a cute buffalo plaid 2 loop bow with a dab of hot glue. Add a decorative ornament hook and display on a garland or your Christmas tree.

I just love the way they look displayed across the front of my mantel. With Rudolph right in the center and four reindeer on each side, they are ready for all to admire, as Santa looks on from above.
